Utah has quietly become one of the most sought-after filming destinations in the country, drawing filmmakers with its diverse landscapes, reliable snowfall, and film-friendly infrastructure. From sweeping mountain vistas to charming alpine towns, the state offers a cinematic backdrop that can double for locations all over the world.
Nestled in the heart of it all, Park City stands out as a favorite among directors and producers alike, thanks to its iconic scenery and deep ties to the film industry. In this blog, we’ll explore 5 movies that showcase just how often this mountain town takes center stage on screen.
5 Movies Filmed in Park City, Utah: From Hereditary to Dumb and Dumber
1. Hereditary (2018)

Following the Graham family as they’re terrorized by an unknown entity, Hereditary quickly became a horror classic upon its release. Packed with chilling jump scares, eerie secrets, and slow-building demonic activity, the film delivers everything horror fans crave. It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and became A24, the production company behind the movie, the highest-grossing film.
When looking for a remote place to film, director Ari Aster landed on Park City as one of the many filming locations for Hereditary. You’ll recognize a few scenes from the movie that were filmed in Park City, Utah:
- The exterior of the Graham family home was filmed at a home on White Pine Canyon Road in Park City, Utah. It’s a private, gated community that’s somewhat visible from nearby ski lifts. The home within the woods perfectly set up the sinister ambiance of Hereditary.
- The art store scene where Annie runs into Joan was filmed outside the Utah Film Studios in Park City.
- The beheading of Charlie was filmed on Richardson Flat Road in Park City, Utah. The pole was actually a prop placed there for the scene, so you can’t see it today. However, you’ll see the surrounding mountains and grassy fields that Charlie and Peter saw on their drive. The first time they pass the pole, they’re driving eastbound, and when the decapitation takes place, they are driving westbound.
Much of the film took place in two spots: the childrens’ high school and inside the Graham home. The high school scenes were shot at West High School in Salt Lake City, and much of the interior shots of the home were actually in custom-built, multi-level sound stages in Toronto, Canada. Aster wanted to create a dollhouse-like aesthetic, which required a controlled environment where walls and ceilings could be removed to match the miniature models seen in the film. Another noteworthy scene from the movie, where they held Charlie’s burial, was filmed at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy, Utah.
2. Wind River (2018)

Wind River is a gripping crime thriller following a wildlife officer and an FBI agent as they investigate a young woman’s mysterious death on a remote Native American reservation. The film blends tense investigative drama with stark, breathtaking landscapes that mirror the story’s isolation and danger. Parts of the movie were filmed in Park City, Utah, as well as in Coalville, Weber Canyon, and Snowbird’s Hidden Peak to replicate the Wyoming winter landscape.
The Utah Film Studios in Park City served as the production hub during filming, providing the cast and crew with a base for set construction, wardrobe, and post-production work. At the same time, nearby locations offered the perfect mix of rugged terrain and snowy vistas, bringing the story’s chilling environment to life.
3. Dumb and Dumber (1994)

The iconic 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber supposedly takes place in Aspen, Colorado. However, much of the movie was filmed in Park City, Utah, and surrounding areas. There are a few scenes you may remember that were shot in the mountain town:
- Lloyd and Harry ride the mini-bike through Aspen, which was filmed on Main Street in Park City.
- Nicholas Andre’s house is located on Oak Court in Park City.
- Mary Sawnson’s parents’ house is located on Perseverance Court in Park City.
Other scenes in the movie were filmed in Utah and Colorado, including places like the Stanley Hotel, the Salt Lake City Airport, and La Caille Restaurant in Sandy.
4. Falling for Christmas (2022)

Falling for Christmas is a lighthearted holiday romantic comedy about a wealthy hotel heiress who loses her memory after a skiing accident. She’s taken in by a kind, struggling lodge owner and his daughter, and as she adjusts to a simpler life, she begins to rediscover what truly matters, leading to an unexpected romance just in time for Christmas. And what better place to film than the world-famous skiing destination of Park City, where snowy slopes and cozy mountain charm perfectly capture the spirit of the season?
The holiday movie was filmed primarily at the luxury Goldener Hirsch Inn in Silver Lake Village, which stood in for the fictional “Belmont Summit Resort.” Stein Eriksen Lodge in Park City was also used for interior scenes of the “North Star Lodge.” Several of the ski scenes were filmed around Park City, Utah, near the Pendry Hotel at Canyons Village.
5. Mountainhead (2025)

Mountainhead is a tense, atmospheric drama that follows a group of characters as they navigate isolation, survival, and shifting relationships in a remote mountain setting. As personal conflicts rise alongside the physical challenges of the environment, the film explores themes of resilience, trust, and the psychological toll of being cut off from the outside world.
The movie came together in less than 1 year and was filmed primarily at a Park City, Utah, mansion. The 21,000-square-foot mansion has 7 bedrooms, 16 bathrooms, a two-lane professional bowling alley, a rock-climbing wall, an NBA-sized basketball court, and even its own private ski gondola. Production designer Stephen Carter searched for “Shining-esque mansion” in British Columbia, Colorado, and Wyoming before finding the location in Deer Valley. Located inside the private community of Deer Crest, the mansion isn’t open to the public and is actually in a quite remote area.
